AMD Sets Summer Ship Date for Quad-Core Chips

AMD announced Friday that it will begin shipping its quad-core Opteron processor, dubbed "Barcelona," in August. Drexel Frat Learns Nothing Is Secret Online

Like something out of a bad CW television show, an E-mail circulating around Drexel University sororities accuses the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity of posting scandalous pictures and offensive content on its internal website, the Triangle reports. The E-mail reads: "Under headings such as 'jawn spotting' and 'smuts,' brothers can access your pictures, Facebook profile links, a list of brothers who have been with you, nicknames, comments about you and even a place where the men can rank you...Not only is it voyeurism, and pornography, it is also morally wrong." The letter also claims the site issued "derogatory 'falsehoods' against the women" and listed whether they had any sexually transmitted diseases.

After hearing the car alarm, the two resourceful Brigham Young University students "quickly arose, grabbed pistols, and went to the underground parking to check on the vehicle." —Alison Go

Prof’s Prototype Could Put Supercomputers on Desktops

University of Maryland researcher Uzi Vishkin announced this week that he has created a prototype device using a parallel processor that could very well be the "next generation of personal computers." The test model, using technology based on parallel processing on a single chip, is capable of computing at speeds up to 100 times faster than current desktops, said Uzi Vishkin, a professor in the Clark School's electrical and computer engineering department and the university's Institute for Advanced Computer Studies.

Genome Switch Creates Bacterial Transformers

Genome researchers have successfully transformed one bacterial species into another by replacing all of its DNA, according to a report published Thursday. Biologists at the J. Craig Venter Institute transplanted the entire genome, or set of DNA, from one species of Mycoplasma bacteria into another. About three days later, the DNA from the first bacterium had taken over the second so that it became indistinguishable from the donating bacterium, the scientists reported.

Campaign Cash That Matters

Class, welcome to Political Fundraising 101. We are lucky enough today to have Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's press secretary, Bill Burton, as our guest speaker. His topic: making sense out of the spin and hype of the upcoming quarterly fundraising tallies that all the candidates will herald as why they are winning the money race. We've always liked and respected Burton because in just a few words, he can explain what's fact and fiction. And in his memo below you will learn why the "primary" money Obama is raising from a record number of small donors may mean a heck of a lot more than the big checks candidates like Sen. Hillary Clinton are raising. Take it away, Bill:
