AOL to Pull Plug on Netscape

Netscape Navigator, the world's first commercial Web browser and the launch pad of the Internet boom, will be pulled off life support Feb. 1 after a 13-year run. Its current caretakers, Time Warner's AOL, decided to kill further development and technical support to focus on growing the company as an advertising business. Netscape's usage dwindled with Microsoft's entry into the browser business, and Netscape all but faded away following the birth of its open source cousin, Firefox.

Data Breaches Hit New Heights in ‘07

The loss or theft of personal data such as credit card and Social Security numbers soared to unprecedented levels in 2007, and the trend isn't expected to turn around anytime soon as hackers stay a step ahead of security and laptops disappear with sensitive information. While companies, government agencies, schools and other institutions are spending more to protect ever-increasing volumes of data with more sophisticated firewalls and encryption, the investment often is too little too late.

FAA Bans Lithium Batteries in Checked Baggage

To help reduce the risk of fires, air travelers will no longer be able to pack loose lithium batteries in checked luggage beginning Jan. 1, the Transportation Department said Friday. Passengers can still check baggage with lithium batteries if they are installed in electronic devices, such as cameras, cell phones and laptop computers. If packed in plastic bags, batteries may be in carry-on baggage. The limit is two batteries per passenger. The ban affects shipments of non-rechargeable lithium batteries.

Microsoft Has a Broken Home

Consumers hoping to safeguard their holiday memories by storing pictures on their Windows Home Servers may instead want to save those files on their PCs' hard drives. A post made on Microsoft's WHS blog warns users that WHS contains a heretofore undiscovered file corruption bug. Although engineers are busily trying to solve the problem, Microsoft said, users are advised not to edit and then save WHS stored files using any of several Microsoft and third-party software applications.

Chip Sales May Not Meet ‘07 Targets

Global chip sales rose 2.3 percent in November to $23.1 billion, but it will take an outstanding December to meet 2007 forecasts, the Semiconductor Industry Association said Monday. "While total semiconductor sales continue on pace to surpass the record level of 2006, it will take very strong sales in December to meet our forecast of 3.8 percent growth in 2007," said George Scalise, SIA's president, in a statement. November sales were boosted by solid holiday sales consumer electronics such as flat screen TVs, portable music players and digital cameras.
